Finding A Perfect Mate

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

No one wants to be alone in this world. But we may suddenly find ourselves without a life partner when we wish we had one. Perhaps we’ve never been married or are newly single as a widow or divorcée. The thought of finding someone to share life with seems overwhelming, if not unlikely.

Fortunately, we serve a God who loves to accomplish what seems overwhelming and unlikely to us. Instead of fearing that we’re too set in our ways to find a life partner, God wants us to be set in His ways and begin to pray.

In Genesis 2:18, God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” So God’s desire for us to have a partner is not the exception, but the rule.

God’s timing may be different than ours ( Ecclesiastes 3:1). Sarah, Abraham’s wife, thought she was too old to conceive, but God proved her wrong. God’s ways are different from and higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). We must wait on God, “for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23).

While certain individuals are called to be single, or choose singleness (which has the advantage of single-minded devotion to God; Matthew 19:12), marriage is the norm for most. That which is the norm in God’s sight, therefore, is something to pray for and seek, trusting in His guidance and provision.

What’s more important to God, however, than you being united with someone is you being united with Him.In fact He wants that for both you and your future partner. Then your union will be succesfully centered on Christ, the only One who can meet all your needs. Your partner will never be perfect, but he or she may be perfectly suited to help you grow in Christ.

If finding the right spouse seems like an impossibility, pray boldly for God’s perfect timing and God’s perfect plan. For with Him all things are possible (Matthew 19:26)—including a perfect mate.

Heavenly Father, Remind us who are single in this world that we are never alone (Hebrews 13:5); that there is no better companion in this life than You. Amen
